A styling problem that comes up often in open-plan living rooms: a console table placed behind a sofa to define the space, but the proportions feel off the moment it's in the room — either towering over the sofa back or disappearing behind it.

Used behind a sofa in an open-plan space, a console table doubles as a room divider and a display surface, but getting the height wrong is the single most common reason this setup looks off rather than intentional.

The Table Should Sit Level With or Just Below the Sofa Back

A console table roughly level with, or a few centimetres below, the sofa's backrest height reads as a cohesive pairing. A table significantly taller than the sofa back looks disconnected, while one much shorter gets visually lost behind the sofa entirely.

Measure Your Specific Sofa, Not a Standard Assumption

Sofa back heights vary considerably between low-profile modern designs and taller, more traditional styles. Measuring your actual sofa's back height before choosing a console table avoids the common mistake of buying based on a generic "behind the sofa" table height.

Leave a Genuine Gap Between Sofa and Table

A console table pushed hard against the sofa back looks cramped and makes it awkward to use anything on top of the table from the seating side. Leaving 10-15cm of clearance keeps the pairing looking deliberate and leaves room to actually reach items placed on the table.

Consider What's Visible From Both Sides

Unlike a console table against a wall, one placed behind a sofa is visible and used from both directions — people walking past on one side, people seated on the sofa on the other. Styling it with this in mind (nothing too tall blocking sightlines, items accessible from the room side) matters more here than in a hallway placement.

Use It to Anchor the Space, Not Clutter It

In open-plan living areas, this kind of console table is doing double duty as a visual room divider. Keeping the surface relatively open (a lamp, a small stack of books, one decorative object) reinforces that defining role rather than competing with it.
