A genuine worry for a lot of new leather owners: cleaning a leather sofa the wrong way can do more damage than the mess it was meant to fix, and it's not always obvious which products are actually safe to use.
Leather is more forgiving than people expect, but only when cleaned with the right approach. Here's a routine that keeps it looking good without risking damage.
Dust and Vacuum Weekly
A soft brush attachment or a dry microfibre cloth removes surface dust and grit before it has a chance to grind into the leather's surface through everyday sitting. This simple weekly habit prevents a surprising amount of long-term wear.
Wipe With a Damp (Not Wet) Cloth for General Cleaning
A lightly damp microfibre cloth handles most everyday grime without needing any product at all. Leather should never be soaked or scrubbed vigorously — excess water can seep into seams and stitching, causing damage that's difficult to reverse.
Use a pH-Neutral Leather Cleaner for Deeper Cleans
Standard household cleaners, baby wipes, and anything containing alcohol or ammonia can strip leather's natural oils and cause premature cracking. A product specifically formulated as a pH-neutral leather cleaner is the only safe option for stains that a damp cloth alone won't shift.
Blot Spills Immediately, Never Rub
Rubbing a fresh spill spreads it and can push liquid into the grain or stitching. Blotting gently with a clean, dry cloth immediately after a spill contains it to a small area and gives the best chance of a full clean with no lasting mark.
Condition Every Few Months
A leather conditioner replenishes natural oils lost through everyday use and sun exposure, which is what actually prevents the cracking most people are trying to avoid in the first place. Conditioning every three to six months (more often in a sun-exposed room) keeps leather supple for years longer than cleaning alone.
