Look for Pile Height in Millimetres, Not Just Descriptive Words
Terms like "plush" or "textured" are subjective and used inconsistently across different sellers. A specific pile height in millimetres gives you a real, comparable number — anything under 10mm is a low pile (better for high-traffic areas and easy vacuuming), while 15mm-plus is a genuine deep pile (softer underfoot but harder to clean and less suited to dining areas or homes with young kids).
Check the Weave Type, Not Just "Material"
Two rugs listed as the same material (say, polypropylene) can feel completely different depending on whether they're a tight flat-weave, a looped construction, or a cut-pile shag. If the listing doesn't specify weave type, it's worth asking directly — this affects both how the rug feels and how it photographs under different lighting.
Zoom Into Close-Up Photos, Not Just Room Shots
Styled room photos are lit and angled to sell the overall look, and pile texture is one of the easiest things to misjudge from a distance. A genuine close-up photo (ideally from the seller, not a stock image) shows individual fibres and gives a far more honest sense of texture than a wide room shot ever will.
