A rug that's too small visually shrinks a room by creating a disconnected island of colour in the middle of the floor, rather than tying the furniture together. Here's how to get the sizing right before you buy.
Measure the Furniture Footprint First, Not the Room
The rug should be sized around the furniture grouping it sits under, not the room as a whole. In a living room, that generally means all four legs of the sofa (or at minimum the front two) should sit on the rug, not hovering just off the edge.
Under-Table Rugs Need More Clearance Than People Expect
For a dining table, the rug should extend at least 60-70cm beyond the table's edge on all sides so that chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out from the table. A rug that only just fits under the table itself will constantly catch on chair legs as people sit down and stand up.
Bedroom Rugs Should Extend Past the Bed
Placing a rug that only fits under the bed itself (rather than extending out on the sides you actually step onto) defeats the purpose. A rug that extends 45-60cm past the sides of the bed gives a soft landing spot getting in and out, rather than a rug you can only see, not feel underfoot.
When in Doubt, Size Up
Between two close sizes, the larger option almost always looks better in a finished room — an oversized rug reads as a deliberate design choice, while an undersized one reads as an afterthought. This is the single most reliable rule of thumb when unsure.
Use Painter's Tape to Test Before Buying
Marking out the exact rug dimensions on the floor with painter's tape before purchasing gives a genuine sense of scale that's very hard to judge from a product photo or even a showroom floor with different room proportions.
