A common moment of panic after buying modern rugs online: unrolling the new arrival to find visible crease lines, curled edges, or a rug that simply won't sit flat on the floor.

This is almost always a temporary shipping artefact rather than a fault with the rug itself, and it's genuinely common with rugs shipped rolled for transport. Here's why it happens and how to speed up the fix.

Rolling for Shipping Is Standard, Not a Sign of a Problem

Rugs are rolled tightly for shipping to protect the pile and reduce package size, and the longer a rug sits rolled, the more pronounced the resulting curl or crease will be on arrival. This is completely normal and not a sign of a faulty or damaged product.

Unroll It Immediately and Lay It Flat

The single most effective fix is simply unrolling the rug and laying it flat in its intended spot as soon as possible after delivery, rather than leaving it rolled in a corner. Gravity and the rug's own weight do most of the flattening work over the following days.

Reverse-Roll to Speed Up the Process

Rolling the rug the opposite direction to how it was shipped for a few hours (rug side out instead of in) helps counteract the original crease pattern faster than simply leaving it flat and waiting.

Weight the Edges or Corners Temporarily

Placing books, furniture legs, or other flat weights on curled corners or edges for a day or two speeds up flattening considerably. This is especially useful for corners that are slower to settle than the rest of the rug.

Warmth Helps the Fibres Relax Faster

Gently warming the rug (indirect sunlight, or a hairdryer on a low, cool setting moved continuously over the area) helps synthetic fibres relax out of their rolled shape more quickly. Most rugs fully flatten within a few days to two weeks without any intervention at all, and warmth simply speeds up that natural process.

When to Actually Be Concerned

A rug that hasn't settled after several weeks despite lying flat, or that shows a genuine defect like uneven pile rather than just a crease, is worth raising with the retailer — but this is the exception, not the norm, for a rolled rug fresh out of packaging.
